Welcome to Rydon Primary School

a warm welcome

Welcome to Rydon School. We are a large primary school serving part of the growing town of Kingsteignton on the edge of Newton Abbot.  The school covers the full primary age from 5 until 11 years when the children begin secondary education.

Rydon's Mission Statement reflects our school's ethos and values. It is a place of high expectations, where everyone connected to the school is positively encouraged to do their best and where achievement is constantly recognised, appreciated and rewarded. Rydon is a place to learn and where equal opportunity and fairness are paramount in our educational beliefs.

Also, our aim is to be recognised as an inclusive school, a place where all members of our community can thrive regardless of race, religion, culture, gender or individual need.

About Us

There are 420 pupils on roll at Rydon with a large group of dedicated teachers and support staff offering a range of exciting opportunities for the school community.

Rydon Primary School joined the Templer Academy Schools Trust (TAST) in 2011. In addition to Rydon, TAST includes Coombeshead Academy, Teign School and Christow Community Primary School. The Trust is named after the Templer family whose fortune was made in the 18th century from developing the naval dockyards at Chatham, Portsmouth and Devonport. They built the Stover Canal, Haytor Granite Tramway and Stover House outside Newton Abbot, where they resided.  Each school within the Trust retains its own individuality and has its own Local Governing Body.

Rydon is fortunate to serve a semi-rural area where there is a high proportion of supportive parents and goodwill towards the school.  Kingsteignton is in a beautiful part of the country close to the coast, national parks and seaside resorts.  We have good road and rail links, and are close to the cathedral city of Exeter, Torbay and Plymouth.

The original school buildings date from 1986. Major extensions were added in the subsequent years.  In addition to the 16 classrooms we have a modern library, a well- resourced IT suite and a great facility offering before and after school provision. Outside we have extensive grounds including sports pitches, three play areas, an adventure playground and a lovely gardening area

Working for us

Education South West

By working together the schools within ESW benefit from:-

  • a support network of like-minded colleagues who believe in taking responsibility for the outcomes of children from age 0 to 19 within the Trust.
  • opportunities to share good practices and CPD opportunities.
  • students who will be supported because of the closer working relationships between primary and secondary schools regardless of where a child attends a school.
  • staff who benefit from the increased opportunities to share best practice at a primary and secondary level and across phases.

These opportunities also provide an incentive to new staff to join one of the academies within the Trust. There are opportunities for the sharing of staff both within and across phases.

  • As a contracted member of staff you will be automatically enrolled into either the Teachers’ Pension Scheme or the Local Government Pension Scheme (whichever is appropriate). Further details can be found on the following websites:

  • Teachers’ Pensions – (TPS)
  • Peninsula Pensions (LGPS)

  • Free car parking is available on the school premises. Spaces are on a ‘first come first served’ basis. There are also secure bike shed where colleagues and students can leave bikes and equipment.

Our catering is provided by TAST Catering Service. Tasty and reasonably priced food is served in our Canteign for breakfast, break and lunch. The meals are home-cooked, and where possible use produce from the school farm – Abbrook Farm. In addition, drinks and snacks are available from the Snack Shack and the Sixth Form Common Room, with free tea and coffee for staff throughout the day in the Staffroom.

We participate in the childcare voucher scheme, which provides tax benefits to working parents.

Staff can save between 32% and 43% on the cost of a bike and cycling safety accessories under HMRC regulations.

Periodic eye examinations for frequent users of Display Screen Equipment are available. We provide assistance in the purchase of glasses if they are deemed necessary.
